iGear PP03J Masterpiece not-Ramjet in hand video

I was able to get a first-hand look at the upcoming controversial iGear PP03J Jet Fighter Team figure, aka Masterpiece Ramjet. The quality is impressive and reinforces the notion that 2011 is the year of the 3rd Party. Look out Hasbro!

It's sad but true: this 3rd party toy is just as good as the real thing.

Thoughts on 3rd party toys – TakaraTomy says “no more!” in Japan

TakaraTomy says no to 3rd party Transformer toys

No means no, and yes means no

A startling announcement was made the other day by Japanese toy retailer Red Mercury when they cancelled a plethora of 3rd party Transformer toy orders.  Although I cannot find any information online even indicating the existence of said seller, I do not doubt the validity of the statement.

The 3rd Party Transformers toy market has ballooned in the past few years.  New “companies” appear to develop over night including manufacturers like CrazyDevy, iGear, and the leader of the pack, Fansproject.  The products these companies offer span the gamut from add-on accessories to official Transformer toys to fully transforming standalone figures.

Some fans claim that these companies fill the gaps left by Hasbro and TakaraTomy, citing a lack of figures they want and apparently deserve.  This of course assumes that customers of Hasbro and TarakTomy deserve to get what they want in any fashion.  The unfortunate thing is that the particular customer base for the 3rd party figures is speckled with selfish greedy middle-agers – a demographic that the major toy companies have again and again reminded the world they need not worry about.

Cool as hell, but illegal!

It goes without saying that these add-ons and replicas of Transformers properties are in violation of copyright law and intellectual property law.   A blind eye has been turned for many years, with the potential gains from stopping production or creating a lawsuit being outweighed by the costs of protecting their properties.

I for one applaud TakaraTomy’s initial stance.  I hope it is the first in a long line of crack downs.  iGear has repeatedly pushed the limit with figures like down-sized Masterpiece molds and Masterpiece coneheads.  It takes more than a non-descript name of the character to save yourself from being an out and out fraud.

Why should TakaraTomy care if there is a ‘gaping hole’ left by not creating a masterpiece Dirge?  It is up to them to decide what gets made in the official Transformers line and if you don’t like, become a customizer.  Mass-producing figures outside of the realm of official production is beyond wrong.  I’m looking at you KOtoys.  Sure, you can still do whatever you want, but when the hammer comes down I hope it’s shiesty thieves like you that’re nailed to the cross first.

I had often wondered why the toy companies don’t attack the resellers that provide an easy outlet for these black market toys, namely TFsource, BigBadToyStore, and various other smaller shops along the way.  Sure, these shops help Hasbro and Takara sell off some of their stock, but compared to the big box stores, the novelty toy store market is a drop in the bucket.  Apparently someone poked the bear and now it’s awake.  I have been waiting for this day, and await to see how the dust settles.  Let’s ask some good questions at Botcon 2011 this year!

Sunstorm and Silver Chrome Seeker from KOtoys.com

KO orange sunstorm and silver chrome classics seekers

Welcome to the land of Chrome

These just came in today from KOtoys.com! The orange Sunstorm is GREAT! Now I don’t know what to do with my yellow one. Unfortunately I received two silver seekers instead of a gold chrome one like I ordered, but as usual with kotoys.com, buy at your own risk! I am currently working on a solution with them so no harm no foul, just another wtf moment.

Highly recommended knock offs! (for once)

Yellow Classics Sunstorm Knockoff from KOtoys.com – better than you were expecting!

Knockoff classics sunstorm from KOtoys.com

And I was pissed I bought this at first!

I just received my Yellow Sunstorm from KOtoys along with the purple seeker squad. I was really upset that I bought this mere hours before the orange more G1-accurate Classics Sunstorm was announced for sale.

However, now that I have it in hand, I must say it’s pretty incredible. The CHMS versions of this mold are much, much better than KOtoy’s own efforts to recreate these guys. I still hate knock-offs, but some of these I feel less guilty about purchasing than others.

As always with KOtoys.com, I must stress you are buying at your own risk. This order turned out great though but I’ll still be picking styrofoam out of my office desk carpet for weeks.

Gold chrome Hot Rod returns from the void – $7,000 for a fake toy?

Gold Chrome G1 Hot Rod MIB

What a peculiar specimen.

A few years ago, there was a gold chromed G1 Hot Rod up for sale and the reputable seller claimed it was a genuine Takara Employee give away. Problem is, no one has ever produced any hard proof that this toy is in fact a Takara employee give away. No one is denying that the figure is indeed cool looking, but my spidey senses tell me that this is not a legitimate Takara creation. What proof do I have? None, just my gut feeling. The gold guy is back in action on Ebay right now for the starting bid of $7,000. That’s a high price to pay for something that could’ve been made rather recently in the right workshop…

There are definitely some crazy Hot Rod fans out there that would love to get this figure in their collection so maybe $7k is the magic number? Lucky 7 baby!  Peep the auction here.

WST Ehobby Shining Ultra Magnus and Diaclone Powered Convoy from Heero Toy Maker

Collecticon Worlds Smallest Ehobby Diaclone Blue Ultra Magnus

That's either a tiny truck or a big kitty!

Heero Toys Maker is a seller on ebay that has gone by a few different names and has been a player in the murkier side of Transformer toys. He is creative and has been able to make some non-official production runs of world’s smallest toys including G2 Starscream & Ramjet, a G1 version of Acid Storm, and various ghost versions of other seekers. He goes so far as to make specific alterations from the original WST figures so as far as bootlegs go, I believe he does the fandom a service rather than a dis-service like other bootlegs and Knock off’s. Heero’s figures are always top quality and I’ve spend several hundred dollars with him over the past 5+ years.

I was excited to receive his unique WST versions of Shining Magnus and Diaclone Powered Convoy today at work and decided to share some quick photos. Each figure cost me over $30, but that’s pretty typical when buying from Heero on Ebay.

WST power convoy and shining ultra magnus

So what's more impressive here - the seekers or the magnii?

I was surprised with the size of the figures. The Magnus armor is rather large compared to the small cab. There are some new moldings and features not found on the original full-sized G1 version included a molded-on belt and locking mechanism for the rear section. All the joints and connection points were nice and tight. The cab just kind of sits in the armor, so that is the loosest part of the whole assembly; I wish it could clip in somehow but I can live with it.

I only purchased these to get the WST Convoy mold in these cool colors, as I am not a Magnus collector. I would definitely recommend these to any that are out there though! Hopefully you can deal with it right now!
