Call the feds! Unaltered samples of MP-23 Exhaust exist!

This ain’t no fake toy!

With the advent of Facebook, I’m reconnecting with a lot of big-time collectors from my pre-TFW2005 banning days. Lots of goodies are being revealed in the process and one of the most notable recently is a production sample of a non-modified version of MP23 Exhaust, otherwise known as Marlboor Wheeljack.

If you need a refreshed on the odyssey of MP23 Exhaust, then go here for further reading.  I will now assume you know everything about how this toy came to be.

The original deco of MP-23 and the box the housed him.

So it’s really not a huge surprise that a few non-nerfed MP-23 Exhausts survived the culling. The hammer from Phillip Morris came down awfully late in the life-cycle of the figure. I would imagine that there are probably 100’s if not 1000’s somewhere, unless part of the litigation was that all completed pieces were destroyed with proof. According to the buyer of this piece, only 2 are known to be seen in existence.

the collector card for the original MP-23 on the left and the nerfed version that was mass-released on the right.

The buyer is now selling the piece with a hefty price tag of $8,000 USD.  And here I was thinking he was going to keep it in his collection.  A pity.  The listing can be seen below.

Who wants to complete their MP collection?

I’m happy to see that illegal contraband like MP-23 is finally appearing in the wild, but I’m a little sad to see that the first person to acquire this amazing piece just wants to flip it for a quick buck. There’s a few manic Masterpiece Collectors out there that have reached out to me asking if I think it’s real.  I definitely think it’s real. All the stories line-up but if you are asking me that question in hopes of not needing this figure to have a truly finished MP collection then you’re flawed.  This is not a mass release. Just like lucky draw Gold MP-01, this is outside of the realm of completist.  You have to climb a few rungs of insanity to think that your collection has a huge gaping hole that will only be filled by figures whose production runs are in the single digits.

Someone out there is likely to purchase this specimen, but I think $8000 is a price that the seller is just fishing with.  The true price ought to be somewhere between $1500-$3500, I think you’d find a buyer easily for that cash.  Then again, how much was the piece originally trading hands for? We may never know.  Happy hunting Collecticons!

Masterpiece Megatron 2 arises as MP-36

megatron-masterpiece-mp36

The captain has come back to reclaim the ship!

Yes, it’s true.  The gray prototype was in fact a Takara-led release of Megatron in the newer, tidier Masterpiece scale to go along with MP-10. It looks awesome.

Prepare for the return of Masterpiece Megatron, finally!

Let the slaughter begin! Digibash by someone that’s not me.

Alerts of a new terrorist threat hit Weibo (Chinese Twitter) today around 8:00 AM CST. Authorities were on the scene immediately and fortunately no civilians were hurt.  No terrorist organizations have yet taken responsibility for the attack, which has lead citizens of the world to surmize who the responsible parties may be. Many have pointed the finger at Third-party entities, while others believe an entirely new mysterious shadow organization called the attack. What is becoming clear as the day progresses is that this may actually be an inside job from the authorities at TakaraTomy of Japan. The company gave no comment when questioned.

Only time will tell, but until then, no one can sleep safe.

MP9 Masterpiece Rodimus vs New Masterpiece Hot Rod

mp9-MP28-rodimus-wtf

Who wore it better?

A friend of mine posted this image to Faceballz today and we started discussing it.  I love you Hot Rod, but you’ve got a bit of Optimus Primal disease.

I’ve taken the liberty to re-adjust the proportions of his waist-down and head to match his upper body.  It looks heavenly, but we can wish in one hand…

mp-hotrod-proportions-adjusted

Not the Hot Rod we want, but the Hot Rod we deserve.

If anything, this has brought to light just how incredible MP9 really was, in terms of concept and design.  The production quality did suffer, but it was a very ambitious Masterpiece figure that I hope will begin to grow on people because the figure had really incredibly accurate vehicle and robot modes.  The modes were to a level that I really don’t feel many Transformer toys can match.

Here is another comparison look at MP9, the new Hot Rod, and our dream-version of Hot Rod front and center.  Le sigh.

Join Masterpiece Shockwave and Hot Rod on their 3 week Machu Picchu hiking trip – bring a back pack!

First time hiking, guys?

Divine powers continue to wash us over with delights as new full-color photographs featuring Masterpiece Shockwave and Masterpiece Hot Rod hit the web today. It’s of note that TFsource posted grainier versions with “DO NOT COPY” plastered all over them.  I lol’d.

The full photos displaying the accessories and alt-modes are just as glorious as the initial reveal a few days ago.  There’s just one aspect shared by both of these guys that I can’t help but mention and that’s the absolutely enormous backpacks. It looks like these dudes independently graduated college and heading out on a quest to ‘find themselves’ in a foreign land. I suppose neither took the time to watch or read “Wild” either.

Backpacks aside, both of these are just simply awesome additions to the Masterpiece line.  Shockwave appears to have a lot of customization available such as options of styles of hands (clear or opaque), his own “Shockwave” gun, a detachable hose, and you can even omit his cannon-hand!

Look at the hands!!!

Hot Rod still looks a little bit like two different sized robots cut in half and re-attached at the waist.  He also appears to be following a bit in the footsteps of Masterpiece Rodimus Prime with his accordion style chest transformation.  Well, we just can’t have it all and I cannot wait to get these guys in hand.  Great work TakaraTomy!

Hasbro’s MP Bluestreak holds a secret – New Masterpiece Megatron coming?

mp-hasbro-bluestreak-megatron-unicron-lineart

Well hello there Mr. Tron, and Cron… and you too Bumblebutt

My coworker and I just received our MP Bluestreaks from Toys R Us and the packaging contains some mighty interesting line art.  Anyone familiar with these types of ‘diagram’ drawings in the packaging knows they almost always reflect real product.  In this packaging, you can see Optimus in his MP-10 rendition.  The interesting things of note here are a brand new slavishly G1 Megatron (with huge feet!), a slightly beefed up Bumblebee that is at least reminiscent of the Masterpiece figure, and my personal favorite, a G1 Unicron in planet mode!  The Unicron is the most surprising and least likely to be based off a toy.  In fact, it almost looks exactly like Floro Dery source material.  The other bots though?  Your guess is as good as mine, but wouldn’t it just be nice, for once, to be right??

TakaraTomy answers long-time Transformers purist collectors’ prayers – MP-18B Blue Bluestreak is born!

MP-18B-blue-bluestreak-holy-shit

My blue heaven!

If you’ve been following this blog at all, which if you have then I probably know you in real life, then you know I’ve been fiending for a Masterpiece Blue Diaclone Bluestreak figure.  This is unanimously THE UNICORN of all Generation 1 collecting.  The only remotely close second would be blue-chested Swoop.  Then you got Red Tracks I guess but who’s counting now?  The point is, we now have a somewhat mass release version of one of the greatest enigmas to ever grace Transformers since its inception.

The news post about this I saw near midnight last night almost made me jump out of bed in joyous celebration, since I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this piece since the car brothers were initially made into Masterpieces.  The MP-18S Silverstreak toy was such a freakin’ letdown that I figured it was a troll move that we would never really see Bluestreak in the flesh.  Those fears are quelled as of today and I’m sorry to admit, but I plan to buy THEM ALL!  Sources indicate that this will be a limited run of about 2000, but no convention has been listed as its release platform.  Whatever the method, you can bet your tuccus that I will be first in line to preorder this baby!

MP5G Gold Megatron ain’t so bad

gold-megatron

He definitely wasn’t the Leader we deserved, but he was the leader we got. Thanks Batman, thanks.

I’m sick of hearing the hate for this guy!  That purple makes all the difference for me.  The big sadness is that the accessories are all the same as the original.  I mean, couldn’t Kremzeek have at least been molded in a different color?  Like Blue?

For under $60 from Lena, I think this was a steal.
