G2 Menasor appears on Taobao with ALL ACCESSORIES – listed for $30,000

g2-menasor-head-taobao

The world’s most valuable accessories, all in one place!

I love the Generation 2 unreleased toys saga and it continues today with another historic offering featuring components of G2 Menasor and the Stunticons.  This time, however, the listing features ALL of the components for a hefty $30,000 price tag.  The last time firepower of this magnitude dropped, the sale went for around $26,000 and hilarity ensued.  The important aspect of that auction was that the purple Menasor head was missing.

Well this time the gang’s all here and it’s on Taobao.  The listing can be found here. I’ve included some of the auction photos for the inevitable time when this auction ends or is pulled.

So are you going to be the ‘lucky’ buyer?

Are these authentic or has the ko market finally created a G2 version of the classics?  Your guess is as good as mine.

TakaraTomy answers long-time Transformers purist collectors’ prayers – MP-18B Blue Bluestreak is born!

MP-18B-blue-bluestreak-holy-shit

My blue heaven!

If you’ve been following this blog at all, which if you have then I probably know you in real life, then you know I’ve been fiending for a Masterpiece Blue Diaclone Bluestreak figure.  This is unanimously THE UNICORN of all Generation 1 collecting.  The only remotely close second would be blue-chested Swoop.  Then you got Red Tracks I guess but who’s counting now?  The point is, we now have a somewhat mass release version of one of the greatest enigmas to ever grace Transformers since its inception.

The news post about this I saw near midnight last night almost made me jump out of bed in joyous celebration, since I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this piece since the car brothers were initially made into Masterpieces.  The MP-18S Silverstreak toy was such a freakin’ letdown that I figured it was a troll move that we would never really see Bluestreak in the flesh.  Those fears are quelled as of today and I’m sorry to admit, but I plan to buy THEM ALL!  Sources indicate that this will be a limited run of about 2000, but no convention has been listed as its release platform.  Whatever the method, you can bet your tuccus that I will be first in line to preorder this baby!

Lucky Draw Protoform Starscream is mine. Thank Japan!

transformers-Gold-lucky-draw-protoform-starscream-movie

Worth its weight in gold… literally

I just wanted to drop in after an extended absence to report that I have found a grail in Japan during my trip.  The day after my birthday, I was able to snag this very rare lucky draw movie 1 figure that has eluded me for years since it’s initial release.  Originally one showed up on Ebay by the enigmatic TF seller Hydra.  I did not win the auction since it was purchased outright and it’s burned me ever since!  Now I can happily say it is mine.  A little bit out of my intended price range, but there supposedly only five of these and it was pretty much my birthday present so… justified, I think?

More coming from my Japan trip as soon as I get decent internet!  The struggle is real Collecticons!

G2 Stunticons sell for $26,815 on Ebay – 71 bids – 974 watchers

g2-stunticons-on-ebay-2014

Now that’s some expensive plastic

Starting on June 27, 2014, a rather auspicious auction appeared under the ebay user z75sales: a bagged set of the Generation 2 Stunticons including never-before-seen factory-applied stickers and missile launchers for G2 Motormaster. Just yesterday, July 7th, the 10 day auction ended and the final bid was $26,815.00!  This is an unprecedented amount for a Transformers auction.  Here’s how it all went down.

The seller

The seller is a long-time ebayer who continues to state the same story: He is a broker who is selling a former Kenner / Hasbro employee’s estate sale.  The seller was kind enough to join Transfans in discussion about the items on TFW under the username starwarsprotos, which might give a hint at his history in toy collecting.  The seller was sharing photographs that were not included in the auction and during this discussion it was discovered that the G2 Menasor head didn’t appear to be in the baggy housing Motormaster.  Regardless of this missing piece, the value did not seem to be brought down.

The Transformers

The G2 Stunticons are some of the most sought-after and hard to find unicorns that are out there.  They have a sordid past and every once in a while they rear their heads and make sure we all know that we’ll never have them.  This particular auction was the first time a stickered near-production-ready version of G2 Motormaster had ever been seen.  Other versions that have been seen online were said to be painted samples and not finished toys.  Even the legendary Karl Hartman chimed in to tell a little bit of the history of these beauties.

The Buyer

It turns out that the winner was indeed an active fan in the community and known as HighPrime on the TFW2005 boards.  Congrats HighPrime!  According to him, he was on vacation and agreed with his wife to sell a large portion of his collection if he could spend the dough to get these guys.

Sorry I kind of petered out on the details of this article and just wanted to get it up.  Congrats to HighPrime and the seller!  Here’s hoping more goodies come out of the mystery bag.

Masterpiece 18S Silverstreak – nominated for biggest bum-out of 2014

MP18S-silverstreak-robot-box

A now for something completely useless…

When the Datsun brothers came out, Bluestreak was far and away the aesthetic winner of the bunch.  The evenness of the alt mode, the muted color scheme, and the fact that a somewhat C-list character was getting the big bad masterpiece treatment elevated its likability above the fan-favorite Prowl. When it was announced that MP-18S would be released later down the line,  a fever raced through the fandom.  Just a year earlier, a special release of the Lamborghini Masterpiece mold had yielded a rare Diaclone-origin Tigertrack in yellow.  Diaclone figures were getting the Masterpiece treatment!  TakaraTomy is known for their stubborness to keep tradition going so the release of a special Datsun, especially Bluestreak, could only mean one thing: Blue Bluestreak!  THE UNICORN ITSELF!

MP18-blue-diaclone-bluestreak-custom

Is that what I think it is?! A unicorn in the wild!? Nope, it’s just a custom by TFW2005 user pumpkingonzo

I have done my own private retcon in my head and the silver version of Bluestreak will always be dubbed Silverstreak, until we get a real Blue Bluestreak.  So to see today that MP18-S is actually going to be the real Silverstreak really pulls at some painful strings inside my body.  This is really a big shame.  The only difference is a few paint apps on the hood of the car.

I’m just so annoyed by this that I think I’m going to let this blog post fall flat.

TL;DR: MP18-S is a huge letdown and it sucks.

Masterpiece 16 and 17 – Prowl and Smokescreen. Where’s Silverstreak?

Masterpiece Transformers Prowl and Smokescreen

More Autobot car brothers coming our way, thanks TakaraTomy!

Today Big Bad Toy Store broke the news about the next set of Masterpiece Transformers, which look to follow suit of Sideswipe and Red Alert: Prowl and Smokescreen!  Also mentioned recently was a repaint of Sideswipe into Tigertracks.  I guess we can expect a Deep Cover or Clampdown really soon as well.

So what else could this mean for future Masterpieces?  Of course Silverstreak… or maybe even, just maybe… a real BLUE Streak…

Transformers Ani-con 2008 Hong Kong Autobot & Decepticon box sets – TFTM holy grail

Transformers hong kong decepticon giftset

My precious!!!!!

Last year I was on a wild goose chase through the annals of TFW trying to hunt down a very rare and obscure set of boxsets from China – The Transformers Movie Ani-con 2008 Autobot and Decepticon Premium boxset. These were a very short release and each boxset featured a nice spread of figures from the first Transformers Movie. Most of the figures inside were premium versions of the Hasbro releases including Leader Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Ironhide, and the standard Ratchet release. The Decepticons included all premium versions of Megatron, Starscream, Blackout, Barricade, and the regular release of Brawl. None of the figures in these sets were extremely notable, it was instead the uniqueness of the packaging which drew my eye.

Cool foil-stamped and embossed packages

I found someone on the TFW2005 boards offering to sell the Decepticon set and I freaked out. It was one of those situations where no one immediately knew what the set was and if I swooped in quick enough, I may snag these gems at a lower-than-expected price point. My ambition got the better of me though after I struck a deal and swiftly paid the seller via Paypal gift, never to receive the packages.

They are beautiful as a set!

Long story short, I got screwed out of a good chunk of money, one of my worst losses in Transformers collecting history. Moral of that story? Be more cautious when you find very rare items you think may never find again – there’s always another chance.

My second chance came as a complete surprise when my good friend Deceptigtar surprised me out of the blue with a brand spankin’ new Autobot boxset!!

Transformers Autobot Giftset from Movie 1

Best friend ever!!!!!!!!

One of the more notable things about this set is the nicely embossed outer shell and the gift certificate featuring artwork by none other than PAT LEE?? Yes, post Dreamwave, Pat Lee was comissioned for some artwork specifically for this certificate of authenticity. What’s also strange is that it features the OLD head of Movie Megatron. A bizarre sight indeed.

All kinds of crazy

Although Deceptigtar wrangled in both of the boxsets, he is of course keeping the Decepticon one. This just means that I shall live to fight another day and continue my search for the Decepticon version. That item is literally the last piece of my Movie 1 collection I need before I have it all, barring Lucky Draws. Trust me, that shit takes up a LOT of space…

G2 Sandstorm and G2 Night Attack Starscream prototypes discovered amidst ancient relics in China, now on Taobao for a shitload of money

Transformers Generation 2 Sandstorm prototype found in China

"Hello, is it me you are looking for?"

Years ago, a bunch of rare Transformers artwork was put up for sale by a dealer who found a huge bulk of it from a few Hasbro employees. Pieces included original box art, the original air brushed autobot and decepticon symbols, back of box art, you name it! Also included was production artwork for never-before-seen Generation 2 figures including a purple Sludge, Black Starscream, and a desert-camo themed Ramjet. These were apparently scrapped like many other figures from the line and thought to have never made it past the employee-created custom mock-up phase. However yesterday, history was rewritten!

Generation 2 Black Starscream artwork

Why didn't I buy this when I had the chance?!? Oh right, I was a college grad and I didn't have any god damn money to waste.

Apparently someone searching the great pyramids of China stumbled upon a treasure greater than any ancient aliens theorist could’ve imagined – prototypes of some of the un-released G2 figures!!! These include a real G2 Sandstorm, a black prototype of G2 Starscream, a spray-painted mock-up of G2 Sandstorm and some boring G2 Stunticons. Pff, like those are worth anything…

Black Death or Night Attack Starscream?

Whomever is selling these relics ain’t no dummy either. With prices like 10,000 and 20,000 Yuan, we are talking well over $1000 USD for either of these prize items. It’s taking everything in my being to stop from purchasing that G2 Black Starscream… only time will tell.

Too legit to quit

So with great discoveries like this, who knows what may still be out there? Purple Sludges? Skywarps with purple missiles and nose cones? BLUE BLUESTREAKS?!?! Keep your eyes peeled Collecticons, Unicorns are still out there.

Unreleased Animated Thundercracker for sale on Ebay!

Animated Thundercracker toy unreleased

You're gonna make the old boys blue!

Has Deceptigtar gone absolutely mad? He is selling his almost one-of-a-kind Animated Thundercracker on Ebay! I don’t know what to say, but with Botcon 2011 concentrating on Animated, no one’s collection will be fully complete without this unreleased gem. TakaraTomy didn’t even make their own version of this guy, but they got Blackout!? What gives! Check out the auction and be sure to bite your nails as the price sky-rockets!

Gold chrome Hot Rod returns from the void – $7,000 for a fake toy?

Gold Chrome G1 Hot Rod MIB

What a peculiar specimen.

A few years ago, there was a gold chromed G1 Hot Rod up for sale and the reputable seller claimed it was a genuine Takara Employee give away. Problem is, no one has ever produced any hard proof that this toy is in fact a Takara employee give away. No one is denying that the figure is indeed cool looking, but my spidey senses tell me that this is not a legitimate Takara creation. What proof do I have? None, just my gut feeling. The gold guy is back in action on Ebay right now for the starting bid of $7,000. That’s a high price to pay for something that could’ve been made rather recently in the right workshop…

There are definitely some crazy Hot Rod fans out there that would love to get this figure in their collection so maybe $7k is the magic number? Lucky 7 baby!  Peep the auction here.
