Wow, RIPT Apparel is stepping up their game.  Not only did they create ANOTHER exclusive comic book cover, but this time they totally went over the top this time. Rarely do you ever see the TF:TM poster get homaged and this time it did.  The results are stunning and really get me pumped to dive into Lost Light!  Rodimus is looking badass in that nemesis paint scheme too!

The comic comes out next week!

What is Megatron’s Alt-mode in Transformers More Than Meets The Eye? SPOILERS

megatron-mtmte-season2-nick-roche

Speak softly and carry a big… gun?

Anyone invested in the last 4 issues of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye will be on edge for the next 30-some days. Luckily Game of Thrones will be well over before the next issue drops, but we were all victim to a Walking Dead-style Season Finale cliff-hanger to muse over.

Hints have been dropped over the course of the last 50 issues to many of the on-going mysteries, but sometimes the biggest hints are in between the cracks. The solution to the riddle can be right in front of us by looking at the things that AREN’T said.

prewar_megatron_design_by_markerguru-alex-milne

Alex Milne almost ALWAYS includes an alt-mode in his initial character sketches

For instance, the second ‘season’ of MTMTE thrust us right into the thick of it with Megatron aboard The Lost Light with a new body. The fact that this is a new rebuild for Megatron has been mentioned sparingly seems like a hint. There’s also a lot of fan backlash and criticism about how More Than Meets The Eye is a story about Transformers that “don’t transform”. While at base level I can admit that the transformations are of almost third level importance compared to the character and world building of this story, it may have been an intentional choice on the author’s part. Could there be some big twist regarding the omittance of Megatron’s alt-mode?

megatron-rebuilt-rid-glovestudios-dark-cybertron-comics

Robots in Disguise & Dark Cybertron Megatron rebuild by Andrew Griffith – Definitely a tank.

The general theories are that Megatron’s body is just a slight tweak to his Robots In Diguise / Dark Cybertron appearance where he was most definitely a battle tank of sorts. This design was his most recent configuration prior to the events in MTMTE, and so it could be said that all we are seeing is a new artist’s take on the current design.  Sure, maybe…

But then why didn’t we see a sketch of Megatron’s alt-mode in Alex Milne’s initial design reveals?  He typically likes to show fans some of the cool design work he does for these books, which he’s mention is done off the clock.  When he revealed the new Megatron, there wasn’t an alt-mode sketch.  No one thought jack shit about it at the time, but I’m raising an eyebrow or two.

What does this mean?  Of course I don’t know, I could just guess but I’m getting really sick of being totally wrong.  I will close with this interesting tidbit that harkens ALLLL the way back to Escalation issue 5.  Fellow MTMTE-fan and Seibertron.com podcaster Scotty P sent me a private message pointing out some eerily similar Megatron Moments to something that happened in MTMTE 54…  you be the judge, I’ll be the jury, and James Roberts?  The executioner.

Tarn-jason-mtmte-mask

Blood bath of spoilers below

Issue 53 of Transformers “More Than Meets The Eye” just came out. It was a doozy and if you were on the front lines for #holdthedoor, then you had a pretty emotional week in pop culture story telling. James Roberts has weaved 53+ issues of mind melt and it’s all been a set up for the next issue, number 54. While it’s true that the eminent battle royale has been promised since issue 50, the last panel of 53 indicates it is actually going to happen. How will the preview panels be served up? Will it open with a two-page slaughter spread like when Overlord was let loose, or will the issue open with the battle’s aftermath?  The latter would surely enrage the blood-thirsty readers ready for battle. There is plenty to surmise, but today, my fellow Collecticons, we are focusing on one topic, and one topic only. #whoistarn

SPOILERS BELOW!

tarn-the-autobot

Whomever is responsible for this really made my day

This isn’t the first time Tarn’s identity has been under investigation, oh no.  I would like to claim the origination of the Roller = Tarn theory, from a post back in 2012, but that’s not the important thing.  What’s important is that one of the major screw ball theories as to Tarn’s Identity was nixed from the record as of this week!

Tarn is not Dominus Ambus.

We learn the shocking truth about why Dominus Ambus was ‘disappeared’ via an emotionally-driven reveal featuring Chromedome, Rewind, and a turbofox. We get not one, but two incredible answers to some of MTMTE’s biggest questions. Dominus, who some fans had already suspected of possibly being the shadow-like Agent 113, is in fact that very entity and was planted by Prowl amidst the Decepticon Justice Division. Not only that, he’s been on panel in the story multiple times, but hidden in plain sight. Literally no one saw this coming, and no one has been looking harder than me.

The_Pet-dominus-ambus

He’s been around the block

I’m going to cement the original TFwiki description of “The Pet” in history before it is drastically altered: The Pet is the nameless companion of Decepticon Justice Division member Kaon. Formerly a wild turbofox turned Sparkeater who has been partially domesticated by the D.J.D., he’s really more of a “sparkchewer”, to be honest.

A prevailing theory, considered by many including myself, was that Dominus had turned sides and become Tarn, or even better yet, was using his load-bearing powers to conceal himself WITHIN Roller’s shell of a body to give us a double sucker punch.  Instead, we have been treated to a super triple sucker punch, and Roberts is the winner. The load-bearer powers did come into play, much like the Minimus Ambus reveal of old, and the circular nature of the entire plot was an applause-worthy long game. How will Rewind and Chromedome fair in the fallout of this revelation?  It’s tough to know if they’ll even survive to find out…

The Original Ultra Magnus

Yeah, I’m gonna need to know a little more about this corruption, thanks.

Let’s start by reviewing my original predications, now that Dominus is out of the running. One idea I had was that the Original Ultra Magnus is still alive, but has been turned from his nobel Autobot-ness into the worst of the worst. This would definitely fit with the line exchanged between Tarn and Megatron in issue 52 about how Megatron “turned” him. Many surmise he is talking to Roller and that he was trying to emotionally damage Optimus Prime by turning his old friend. That’s an easy guess, but I believe there are additional levels.  Whomever Tarn was, obviously had a lot of clout and dissent towards the Decepticon cause.

What we don’t know is WHEN this corruption happened in the history of the great war.  Was it recent?  The beginning? The DJD, to me, have always seemed like a late-war creation. A bit of a desperation move by Megatron because his soldiers were questioning the cause. Has this Tarn ALWAYS been the Tarn?

Another indication is the brutal slayings on the Quantum duplicate Lost Light. Minimus Ambus had an expectionally grisly death and if may have been at the hands of the original Magnus, laying waste to any pretender that followed.  If this were the case, what will Tarn’s reaction be to Maximus Ambus? We’re sure to find out shortly.

Terminus

transformers-terminus-tarn-idw

Just where did he go?

Who is the real creator of Megatron? Apparently Terminus, who played the encouraging coworker of Megatron-Miner-Type on Messatine, was integral to the creation of “Towards Peace.” He appears briefly in flashback form during an important moment in Megatron’s past. Brainstorm time jumps deep within Messatine at this moment, and everyone evacuates, leaving the fate of Terminus nebulous. We learn later that Terminus was the one spreading the gospel of Megatron by hiding it in the bodies of dead miners that were shipped back to Cybertron.  Talk about some heavy reading material!

His name comes up sparingly and usually any resolution is cut off by a sudden event. Dramatic effect? Foreshadowing? Nothing? There is definitely more than meets the eye here. Megatron appears conflicted with any mention of him. Is it that Megatron feels responsible for his ‘death’? Or is there more?  Only Megatron, Rung, and Tarn himself have ever mentioned his name in the story and that triumvirate makes for a very exclusive club.

Sentinel Prime

sentinel-prime-tarn-titans-return

Let’s be honest, this prediction would be totally awful if true.

This is the most “big business” move of all the options and would totally stink of a Hasbro take-over of the narrative. We’ve already been told Sentinel is coming back. He’s in the new toy line and Hasbro just announced lots of new initiatives, company-wide. This could also mean a major shift for how they’ve been working with vendors like IDW, and perhaps want more synergy between their toys and the stories being told. Let’s really hope not, because Sentinel would have an awful lot of ‘splainin’ to do once the mask is off.

Beast Wars Megatron

Big purple is back!

Yeah yeah, I know I’ve been predicting Beast Wars Megatron’s IDW debut as a massive climax reveal in Sins of the Wreckers, but I think that theory is now squashed due to reading way too far into some dialogue I miss-interpreted. I’m not counting it out, but there also might be a chance for this guy to actually be the man behind the mask. He is fanatical, he has eloquent speech patterns… the parallels continue but I think the man below said it best:

Musings by @colinwarhurst

Roller

And of course, there’s good old Roller. Prime’s old pal. The solider left behind. The easily-addicted all-American football-brawler that got lost along the way. There are countless threads tying Roller to being the original identity of Tarn, but I won’t discuss them because it’s old hat at this point. With the reveal of Dominus Ambus being part of the DJD, I feel that Roberts has even more incredible tricks up his sleeve and while Roller would be perfectly satisfying, I want JR to turn the knife! Blow my mind, make it hurt!

A Lake

tarn-lake-cybertron-google-transformers

A little too serene for our Tarn

What’s in a name?  Probably not much in this case but I did think it was interesting that Tarn means something that I was not yet aware of. The obvious answer is that the city he is named after had a large Cybertronian lake nestled next to it. What could that mean, fiction-wise? I haven’t the slightest but since Dominus Ambus meant Master Walks. With a linguistic trick like that, this is worth a stab!

Time for a More Than Meets the Eye prediction follow-up! (spoilers)

megatron-gets-his-ass-kicked

Lots of purple leakage in this issue.

Issue 52 of More Than Meets the Eye has been out for over 48 hours, so I feel it’s ok to start discussing what’s going on!  It’s been three issues since this arc has started, and we have only three issues left before the cement hardens around our pitiful hearts.

First let’s take a look back at some of my predictions following issue 50 and how they have stacked up so far.

  • Ratchet and Drift will return to the Lost Light, post mutiny.
    • Potentially still correct.  What I didn’t predict was that they would arrive on Necroworld first, but man, was I glad to be wrong.  Their return almost brought this Collecticon to tears! I never thought I’d be rooting for fucking Drift!
  • Perceptor, Riptide, and Thunderclash will conspire against Getaway’s mutiny and regain control of the ship.
    • Potentially still correct. It really seems like the mutiny is being used as a way to shift the narrative in a big way, at least for now, and potentially indefinitely.
  • Sunder will be instrumental in regaining control of the ship.
    • Potentially still correct.  Like above, the fate of the Lost Light and it’s fallout remain to be seen.
  • Members of Team Rodimus will die.
    • Potentially still correct. The bodies haven’t hit the floor yet, but they be hittin’ soon. Incidentally, the only deaths have been fodder Decepticons and one very prominent member of the DJD.
  • Tarn’s identity will be revealed when he comes face to face with Skids.
    • Potentially still correct. Tarn’s identity continues to teeter-totter it’s way into the dialogue.  What is currently unclear is if the Transformers at large are aware of his identity or not.  Although I was a spear-header of the Tarn = Roller movement, at this point I believe Roller is a red herring.
  • Ten’s pre-legislator identity will be revealed before his imminent cannon-fodder death.
    • Potentially still correct. Ten appeared to be our first major casualty of the story, but luckily he evaded death at the last second.  He sustained some heavy injuries though, and we’ll see if he makes it.  The bit about his identity may not be important at all though.
  • Organics will be involved in the final battle.
    • Potentially still correct. Now that Overlord has returned, many wonder who brought him back to life.  There’s only one son of a bitch I can think of that would’ve been able to fix him up, and that’s Pharma who is probably hanging out with Mr. Tentacles.  Are Overlord’s benefactors the same guys with the green symbol that have been experimenting with techno-organics?  It’s quite possible, and it’s still unclear who exactly is who.
  • The Fate of Megatron.
    • ??  This one was less of a prediction and more of a cliff-note.  He’s almost bought it already and he continues to maintain his pacifism, which is touching. What’s also touching is that giant VERY BLACK hole in his chest that if you go back to issue 28, you might remember it has some significance… I think Megatron will survive, I hope he does.  He needs to.
mtmte-megatron-blackhole-issue28

Will we ever see Whirl’s missing arm again?

So I guess my analysis is still up for debate.  I was wrong about some details, but we have 3 more issues to see how the chips fall. The main mistake I made was thinking the resulting fate of The Lost Light would tie into this story, but it’s clear we are firmly planted on Planet Necrobot for the remainder of this story arc.

So let’s reset the board and create some NEW predictions!!!

  • Tarn will completely unravel, and this will lead to in-fighting amongst the Decepticons. The arrival of Overlord has thrown Tarn’s power balance completely off. The big guy does what he does best and gets right under Tarn’s skin. The dialogue between the two is solid gold, and Deathsaurus’s demeanor is also very telling. After watching Tarn execute one of his nearest and dearest right in front of him, I can imagine everyone slinking off quietly to have an awkward conversation. The question is just who will turn on who?  Will Deathsaurus stick with Overlord and leave the DJD on their own? Will Overlord complete his mission and then turn on everyone else? Will Tarn go back to his old ways and re-instate “the list” once the seige ends? I cannot wait to see how this plays out and speaking of Overlord…
  • Pharma was instrumental in nursing Overlord back to health. He’s the only MF that could’ve put humpty back together again, in my opinion.  The fact that he made a guest appearance in Sins of the Wreckers might have just been a coincidence, but I doubt it. Whomever this mystery team is, I believe Pharma is on their payroll.
  • Someone on Team Rodimus will break rank and use the teleporter to flee like a coward. My inkling is that Brainstorm might bail, but it could also be Whirl or even Swerve. Who is the biggest coward? I’m pretty sure it was peer pressure that got everyone to stay and when the bombs start falling, the true self will come out.
  • The black hole in Megatron’s chest will be integral to the plot. Team Rodimus already has a personal teleporter that could get them off the planet, so why would they need Megatron’s portal? His chest wouldn’t get those bodies out of the basement any better than the original teleporter either.  I just think it’s awfully fishy that there is a big gaping hole in his chest…

It’s difficult to start guessing who will die and how.  Now that Overlord has shown up, (which I did consider as a possibility!) it’s almost impossible to guess what happens next.

In closing, I’d like to give props to whomever combined these two images.  Ravage piloting a ship is possibly ushering in a new epoch of Transfandom.

Oh but he DOES have quite a good idea.

Sins of the Wreckers Issue 3 iTunes preview – here are the details (spoilers)

sins-mesothulas-sideways-tarantulas

Don’t even try to tell me these aren’t the same guy

Bombs are dropping!! For Prowl, this is more than just a figurative saying as we take a look into his past.  Nick Roche writes us back into the infancy of the big war with the Decepticons and borrows some nuggets from James Roberts well-weaved plot titled “Shadowplay”, part of More Than Meets the Eye. There was lots of deception going on back then, and the Autobots and the corrupt senate were right in the thick of it.  The recent characterization of Prowl is coming to head as we learn more and more about the skeletons in his 7 million year-old closet.

We finally get a look at Mesothulas, Prowl, and one very conspicuous and silent bot which I am going to go ahead and call out as pre-war Hubcap.  Here he is:

sins-of-the-wreckers-mystery-bot

Oh don’t mind creepy old me.

A new theory appears!

Mesothulas could potentially be a combination of BOTH Sideways and Tarantulas.  Funpub pre-Beast Wars Tarantulas was a motorcycle after all, and the character we see here definitely has bike parts.  The head sculpt seems to feature aspects of of both of Armada Sideways’ heads as well as the mutant heads from the toy of Tarantulas and Blackarachnia, as indicated below.

Images totally ganked from tfu.info

Is the excitement building for you? Is Mesothulas going to be IDW’s Tarantulas, Sideways, or something… else?  Hopefully we learn more in the short wait for issue 3!  THIS Collecticon is sure looking forward to it.

So just who kidnapped Prowl? – Sins of the Wreckers mysteries

sins-of-the-wreckers-villain-who-prowl

Head of the mysterious shadow organization known as Spectretron

Nick Roche’s Sins of the Wreckers has finally been unleashed upon us resulting in showers of praise, rejoicing, and my most favorite, biting questions!  I don’t need to waste anyone’s time recapping the plot because if you ended up here from a Google search, you are already deep in the rabbit hole.  So just who could’ve possibly kidnapped our favorite asshole, Prowl?  Let’s identify some likely suspects!  Clearly if any of the crap written below is correct, these are spoilers so read at your own risk!

Suspect 1: Noisemaze

The first question one has to ask before trying to identify a suspect is whether or not the character behind this is someone we’ve seen before in the IDW-verse, or not. IDW has been on a terror lately pulling characters from previously non-G1 canon into the fray such as Knock-out, Bulkhead, and more. The trend may be continuing with more modern and under-developed characters in order to create some fresh new villains for the Autobots and Wreckers, similar to how Lockdown has been elevated to super-villain status thanks to “Transformers: Age of Extinction”.

noisemaze-IDW

Evvvvil

Choosing Noisemaze as a potential culprit behind Prowl’s disappearance is kind of a lazy assumption based solely on the use of his name as a location instead of a character. Anyone reading that line on the most colorful page of the comicbook instantly conjured up visions of this guy.  Is he likely the owner of that shadowy visage?  No, but because of the wordplay, Noise-y here gets an honorable mention.

Suspect 2: Tarantulas

With all the newly introduced beast-formers such as Blackarachnia and Rattrap in the Transformers ongoing, the lack of certain notable characters was noticed more than the ones that did appear. Many of the more treacherous characters were missing from their ranks and specifically the covert evil scientist double-agent Tarantulas on TFwiki who infiltrated the Predacon ranks for the Tripredacus Council.

tarantulas-beast-wars-predacon-sins

My spidey-senses are off the charts!

Perhaps this would be a non-beast-affiliated version of Tarantulas more akin to how the TFCC has recently released the character… a few times now. That would make it possible for his traditionally jangly silhouette to match the bulky shoulder profile of the quick glimpse we got from Prowl’s point of view.  However Tarantulas rarely works alone.  He is typically working for someone else in charge and speaking of that man in charge…

Suspect 3: Hubcap

It feels so very in-character for creator Nick Roche to leave a giant glaring clue right out in the open for us to gush over after the series is finished and in this case, I believe it to be the ever-so-unlikely timid and polite administrator Hubcap. His posturing is wonderfully rendered by Nick and with such grace that it stood out to me. How did this guy get in the position he’s in? What’s his backstory? Nice of you to ask, because it delivers us another juicy piece of the puzzle: motivation.

hubcap-sins-wreckers-villain

The Keyser Soze of Transformers?

The only historical data we have on Hubcap is that he was friends with the ill-fated Pipes. I say ill-fated because he was sent to an early grave by Overlord who was on The Lost Light.  The reason he was on The Lost Light in the first place was because of a covert operation Prowl conducted and has yet to be reckoned with for.

It does seem like a stretch, but there is plenty of back story to dive into for Hubcap as the issues of this comic continue.  There’s even a mention by Roadbuster about special “frequencies” going on in his brain. Frequencies that could perhaps make a lot of… noise?  So much so that his mind could resemble… a maze?

If you really think about Hubcap, there’s a lot of questions that we don’t have the answers to yet. How did he get to be on the operations side of the Wreckers?  Does he want to be there, or was he stationed? Is he more of a threat than he seems?

Hubcap certainly appears to be the least comfortable with his armaments on the closing spread, but could this be another red herring to make him seem even less threatening? Is he the Darth Darth Binks of the IDW Universe?!  There’s four issues left, so enjoy the ride!

Suspect 4: Sideways

Along the same thought-lines as Noisemaze comes the vaporous and deceiving Sideways.  Did you know that Noisemaze was his Japanese name? It all starts to make sense now doesn’t it…

Armada-sideways-sins

It’s time for someone to get an updated toy!

Sideways is an especially delicious suspect for the ringleader because of what his existence always seems to be a precursor to: Unicron. IDW has been very careful not to open the lid on the Unicron can for the past 10 years and with good reason. The coming of the Beachball of Doom if oft times used as the final moneyshot of a series and is the penultimate event that ever seems to happen in a Transformers saga.  It is truly difficult to out-do a titanic demon planet god once you’ve done it but if IDW ever goe down that road, it will most likely be incredibly drawn out and be a very long con.  Sideways could be a great way to start sowing the Unicron seeds.

How would Sideways feel as a villain without Unicron?  There are plenty of ways to skirt that issue and have him exist beyond being an agent of the Chaosbringer.  For instance, perhaps he is a NAIL that has gone rogue.  Maybe he’s a creation of the Quintessons instead. He could be from an entirely different race of robotic beings. The options are there and I would be delighted to see this slippery fellow join us on journey of Sin.

Suspect 5: Megatron (Beast Wars)

This is the big one.  I don’t have a lot of proof for this, I just feel this would be an amazing way to introduce a huge villain that could really shake things up in the IDW universe.  We’ve lost Megatron to the Autobots, but as Yoda said “There is a another.” Galvatron is turning out to be a despot villain, but what about a terrorist from a lost colony looking to reclaim their homeworld? Could that be the origins of IDW Beast Wars Megatron?  It would certainly seem topical for today’s social issues and elevate the big purple dinosaur to Phase-sixer level fear status.

beast-wars-megatron-sins-idw

You want it to be me, yesssss…

If I was writing this story, I’d want access to some really awesome characters that have been waiting in the wings. Nick didn’t come back to this just to let Springer of the leash, he wants to really put another mark on the Transformers comics and after what he and James started with Overlord, I am positive they have a taste for greatness.  Beast Wars Megatron would be, in my opinion, one of the last major “Oh no you DIDN’T!” fangasm characters left to appear in the modern Transformers era.

The only problem is… what is his name?  It certainly won’t be fucking Megatron, but this would also be a wonderful opportunity to put his name on the map!

Suspect 6: Entirely new characters

It’s also entirely feasible that Prowl’s captor(s) is someone we’ve never seen and it will be a completely new character like Turmoil or Rung. If that’s the case, I’m not going to sit here and bore you with my made-up fan fiction characters because that would be more torturous than putting me in a metal box to melt my way out of.

I hope you enjoyed the read and here’s to waiting for the next issue!

Autobot Megatron – I never thought I’d see the day! SPOILERS!

autobot-symbol-comics

Nothing strange here!

I’m not usually one that cares about spoilers.  I’ve had so many endings ruined for me that I just quit caring.  My friends get angry because they say I in turn spoil things for them, which I can understand, but in the end it’s only a story.

Today was profound though.  For the first time in an awfully long time, something was spoiled for me in Transformerland and I was just super shocked.  I was even warned!  This revelation was so jarring that I think I actually yelled out when I saw it.  The whole thing came in a promotional image that was revealed by IDW today, which you may see below IF YOU DARE!  Being a promotional image, I’m kind of shocked that they released this during the mid point of the story of Dark Cybertron, but the cat is already out of the bag.

So will our upcoming announced Leader Generations Megatron sport an alternative symbol?  Let’s hope so.  Sure, Prime has been evil plenty of times but one thing I never thought I’d EVER see was Megatron sporting the Autobot symbol.

My guess is that a new paradigm shift will occur with Transformers and for the first time ever, perhaps faction lines will be crossed indefinitely.  Perhaps they will no longer identify as Autobots or Decepticons and just become Cybertronians.  It really has to cross over to the toys for it to have any lasting impact, and here’s hoping that it does.

The biggest event to wager on in Transformers history – More than Meets the Eye #15

transformers-mtmte-15-odds

Who lives, who dies?

I can’t remember being so excited about something in Transformers since… ever!  The build up to “More Than Meets The Eye” issue 15 has been EXCRUCIATING and it’s all coming to head by the end of this month. The pieces have been falling into place for over 2 years by now, and we are going to see heads roll, sparks fly, and tears fall.

My fellow fans at Bottalk have started the betting early and a thread that features a multi-answer poll asking WHO DIES (in issue 15).  The hullaballoo got me thinking, could Las Vegas really start taking bets on who lives and who dies?  Of course not, since the outcome is based on written fiction and anyone involved could make out big but let’s just pretend for a second…

Based on the Necrobot’s list, we know that Hound, Chromedome, Dipstick, Drift and Ultra Magnus will ‘kick the bucket’ someday, although it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen on the Lost Light.  In fact, that list could be a red herring, and instead mean they live!  If there ones thing we can count on, it’s the big bruisers, Ultra Magnus and Fortress Maximus, getting a few good hits in.  Unfortunately, I also expect that a lot of the ‘one-liner’ crew of the ship to make their final bow during the pages of issue 15 and probably even 16.

Another common expectation is the arrival of the Decepticon Justice League and with the recently revealed power level of their leader Tarn, he may be more of a match for Overlord than we thought.  Ultimately, we can expect the death toll to reach the double digits We’re bound to see some energy spill on the floor.  By the looks of the teaser image below, Cosmos and Brawn may have already ‘bought it,’ but Springer’s been wrong before…
