Series of three – Guessing the Botcon 2011 giftset theme

Botcon 2011 theme in Transformers series of 3

Spin the wheel, see what we get!

From the official Botcon twitter yesterday:

Just realized SO many stories and/or TF continuities (as a whole) were told in installments/seasons of 3… Well, get ready for Season 3.5!

So this could mean a few different things and probably debunks both of my theories of a Car Robots / Robots In Disguise theme or a straight Beast Wars Set. It is true that many Transformers series came in “seasons of three.”

  • Transformers Generation 1 – 3 seasons (let’s just say the 3 episodes of “season 4” do not apply here)
  • Beast Wars – 3 seasons
  • Unicron Trilogy – Armada, Cybertron, and Energon all consist of their own season and a continuation of the same story with relatively the same characters
  • Animated – 3 seasons and a ill-fated fourth season
  • Transformers films – 3 movies = 3 seasons

My estimation is that we’ll get a mixed set of new characters from each different TF universe.  It would be nice to see some more classic-ized Unicron Trilogy toys much like the Hot Shot figure but I am not holding my breath.  Apparently we will know the truth as soon as the Collector Club Magazine starts hitting mailboxes around the country.

Dark of the Moon Ultimate Optimus Prime – Transformers 3 Trailer is armor

Transformers 3 Optimus Prime with Trailer

I SAID I smelled giftset!

TFW2005.com has just posted an initial notice of an upcoming giftset for “Ultimate Optimus Prime.” The set comes with the trailer and it will turn into armor to power-up the Autobot leader.  See my initial prediction of this giftset here.

The real news here is confirmation of the trailer’s function.  Some had assumed it will be a replacement for Jetfire’s parts, or will even house them.  Now it will apparently become Prime’s new pants.  There is also expected to be a combination of Prime with the proposed Space Shuttle Transformer so that Prime can travel to the moon, most likely in a speedy few seconds.

At two-per-case, this is going to be a similar size to ROTF Devastator or Movie 1 & 2 Ultimate Bumblebee.  Considering what a brick of crap Ultimate Bumblebee actually was, lets pray that this toy stands on its own and simply is the truly Ultimate Optimus Prime.

Ultimately hidious!

I’m not holding my breath because honestly, how can they top the ROTF leader Prime??  Please make us drool… please!

Botcon 2011 giftset theme rumblings – Robots In Disguise or Beast Wars giftset?

Transformers Robots In Disguise Sideburn

Photo from Plasticcrack.net

With 2011 right around the corner, I can’t help but start getting antsy about the next Botcon set. With the upcoming Club Exclusive Side Burn figure and last year’s Sky Byte addition to the G2 set, a Robots In Disguise theme seems plausible. Not to mention 2011 will be the 10 year anniversary to Robots In Disguise airing in the United States. There are some obvious repaint choices here such as G2 Optimus Prime as Scourge and Ironhide / Ratchet as X-Brawn, but where can the set really go from there?

I also must admit that I’ve been dreading the day that we would start seeing homages to figures that are only 10 years old. It just kind of puts some mortality in the mix of Transformers collecting. But what are you gonna do?

Another speculation that seems to have some support would be ANOTHER Beast Wars homage for the 15th anniversary. The thought is that the Beast Wars characters could be brought over to the Animated Toyline. This also seems to follow suit with the Animated Transtech Cheetor relased that Funpub is planning for 2011. Fat chance on that one though Beast Wars lovers. So soon you forget that we already received something similar for the 10th anniversary in pre-Earth mode set. I can’t say that I wouldn’t mind seeing some new Animated toys in some fashion though.

What could all this have to do with the only leaked tagline thus far, “The Invasion Has Begun?” I guess we have 6 months to speculate on that so let the slaughter begin!

The Japanese Animated 7-pack… what is it?

TakaraTomy's Animated 7-pack Giftset?

Think this is just a bulk order of each item in individual packaging? Think again.

So we all know that TakaraTomy is finally releasing Transformers Animated in Japan almost two years later. Big whoop. We have seen some photos and promo graphics from the line and it appears that most toys will have a metallic sheen to the paint job, which is in almost complete contrast of the matte vinyl toy look of their Hasbro counterparts. What we haven’t seen yet is the packaging, but if TakaraTomy is being their normal selves then they wouldn’t do any less than give us something completely new, original, and crazy.

Speaking of crazy, has anyone seen the prices on the new figures? The import fees seem to be insane! Well this Collecticon has found out a little bit of behind the scenes information regarding TakaraTomy’s animated toys. According to US retailers, demand is low and the fact that Takara is releasing “everything at once” is creating a lot of uncertainty amongst how well it will actually sell. Usually toylines are released in waves, so that it gives customers and fans a chance to spend a little bit of money at a time and still get figures they want in the long run. This time, TakaraTomy is releasing a whopping 32 figures to start the line!! This is putting a lot of retailers, especially ones in the USA, in a tight spot. If TakaraTomy Animated doesn’t sell well, they could be out a ton of money to start the year.

TakaraTomy Animated Starscream vs BumbleBee Giftset

These snazzy promo shots lead me to believe that we are going to see some really fun packaging when these finally hit shelves!

So what’s the solution?

Buy small quantities and hope you sell them all. This means that if TakaraTomy Animated is a hit, they are going to be VERY hard to get in the USA. Reorders are not likely to be an option and over 30 figures to start means that low numbers of cases are bound to be imported to the USA. It’s not a bad move to be wary of TakaraTomy Animated sales though. It is essentially a complete line of repaints, however it will include some figures that haven’t even seen release here in the USA including Blackout and Arcee.

One more thing… along with individual releases of the figures, a very expensive 7-figure bulk purchase has been made available at online retailers BigBadToyStore and TFsource.  The prices on these orders are quite high at $269.99 and $259.95 respectively.  Typically, one might think that this is just a store-made bulk-item for those that wish to buy the whole first wave of the line.  That is not the “case.”

Apparently, this is a huge item that is the only way to get these items before the launch date of all the additional figures.  TakaraTomy is not allowing retailers to purchase these figures separately until a certain date, but this bulk item is available well before the individual and battle packs.  So it’s difficult to know if this is meant to be some super-crazy 7-pack giftset, or just a especially shaped shipment case of voyagers and deluxes together. It’s not clear what the truth is, but if it actually is a 7-pack, you’ve think we would know about it by now.  If it has actually been kept a secret until now, this is likely to be the most valuable and rare Transformers set to appear on the market in some time.  Time will tell.

***UPDATE

Well TakaraTomy Animated has been released and it turns out that there was NOT a huge 7-pack.  Oh well, you can’t win them all!
